There be enough hideous creatures there already!! Besides, Costa Rica didn’t hurt anybody…they are a friendly, peaceful people what with all that socialized health care they have been getting for years…but I digress.

This is an informative, interactive map from CNN showing the 10 biggest earthquakes around the world since 1990. I clipped this from an excellent site containing free technology resources for teachers.

Under the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities, web and other tech designers in United Nations signatory countries are required to take into account the accessibility of their products, software, and services to persons who are disabled. The United States signed the Convention on July 30, 2009.

This is an incredibly important issue. From time to time, each one of us has felt overwhelmed or frazzled by the speed at which technology moves and changes, the information overload, and the learning curve that comes with our ever-changing technical lives. Now, stop and consider for a moment, you are visually impaired or have some other disability that prevents you from keeping pace as easily as a non-disabled person. Maybe you are elderly and cannot process a website heavily-laden with flash animation and dozens of hyperlinks.

It is imperative that all designers keep disabled individuals in mind; otherwise, our race for ever-improving technology is on the verge of abandoning a significant group of individuals and excluding them from our information society.

Falling is the number one health risk to the elderly, but as this article points out, being able to predict when an elder is “fall-prone” much less prevent the fall, is a challenge.

European scientists, however, are exploring the use of today’s technological devices to assist the elderly in developing better coordination, balance, etc. The article explores some of these efforts, which include using MP3 players.

This article is yet another in a series of articles I have been reading lately which demonstrate the wide application of current and emerging technologies in the field of medicine. And, with some dismay, I continue to see other nations besides the U.S. taking the lead in this regard. Perhaps, it is mere coincidence, but it seems to me that just about every article I read involves a European doctor or team of doctors leading the way.

Maybe we’re too busy inventing sprinkles to shake on our food to keep us from gorging at the dinner table…
